From her first week at Casal Aveda Institute, Mia Santiago knew she would take her career to New York to work in magazines, and she wasn't taking NO for an answer.

Now a Celebrity Stylist for almost four years, Mia has worked with an impressive list of big-name clients, including Mariska Hargitay, Hilary Swank, Jesse Tyler Freguson, and Britany Snow. She has collaborated with fashion magazines, editorial shoots, and television networks. She is loving her successful, active, and glamorous career.

While preparing to travel for an upcoming photoshoot, Mia gave us the scoop on inspiration, advice, and success in the industry.

What do you think makes an artist successful?

Never giving up and always learning. When I wanted to move to New York, it was my goal to see my work in magazines and work with celebrities. I didn't let what everyone said make me afraid. I did it anyway. I assisted for many years at the start of my career and that was an essential building block on my journey. Along the way I was told NO quite a few times, but I was persistent! I say YES to every opportunity. I’m always working on building my portfolio. I have some very amazing projects coming out and I can’t wait to share them with you!

When people tell you you can’t do it, you just have to keep going and be prepared to be told no. Never give up.

What inspires you as an artist?

I find inspiration through other artists. Social media, especially Instagram, is an amazing tool. I follow people in my industry I look up to like Danilo official, Odile Gilbert, and Serge Normant. I go to their work and it rejuvenates me and gives me fresh ideas. Mane addicts is also amazing for stylists to share their work. I did an Instagram takeover for them and it was a blast!

Do you have any advice for aspiring artists?

I think it's VERY important to assist amazing artists. When you're starting out in your career you have basic knowledge and encouraging educators from school, but then you need to gain experience and get your hands in hair. Salons and the editorial world are extremely different. It's important to find where you are interested, and pour yourself into it!
